The term Pocketbook, the series to which this piece belongs, came into use in the 1600’s. Originally it was a small fold-able item that snapped shut and was thought of as a safe way to carry and possibly conceal bills and coins. It was carried in ones pocket or purse. Over time Pocketbook became synonym of purse.
